Certified Divers Information

Have you ever wished that you could have someone available to answer your questions regarding your next dive destination, someone with over 52 years of diving under their belt?

Well if you are planning to dive in Antigua, here is your chance to benefit from this exclusive service.

Hi there.... I'm Robert Stacey and I'd like to talk to you for a moment about my friend and Master Diver the legendary Big John Birk. John doesn't like to talk about his accomplishments a lot, so I will. Briefly, John opened his first certified diving operation some four decades ago in Antigua where we first met.

John taught me how to dive and, well, we've been diving together ever since, in my favorite place in the world - Antigua.

Wow! If you have never been to Antigua, you are in for a treat. If you have already been, you keep coming back, like I have for more than 40 years. In this beautiful warm and most-friendly tropical paradise, Big John has meticulously and originally explored, recorded, pioneered, cataloged and defined hundreds of Antigua's most beautiful dive sites. In the Caribbean, he was one of the first to utilize GPS navigation. He's become so well known for his work he has often been called upon to work with the National Geographic, the Cousteau team and many marine biologists in their important ocean work and, he has been the diving instructor to some well known movie stars and celebrities.

You'll find John has an intensive knowledge of many subjects including of course, marine biology. He loves conversation over a wide range of subject matter. Many people say John is one of the most interested and interesting persons to spend time with in the world. It's true. I can testify to that.

Over the years John has taught and guided diving enthusiasts from all over the world to experience the undersea world of the Caribbean. After more than 50 years of diving and thousands of hours accumulated underwater time, Big John recently retired from the "under the boat territory". He concentrates on getting people the real diving experience in Antigua based on his decades of experience based on his intensive knowledge of the territory.

John knows exactly where to dive depending on your location and weather conditions which, in Antigua are usually sunny and warm.

He will plan out your expedition with you around your personal requirements and help you arrange your holiday in Antigua with great recommendations on how to enjoy your time.

On your dive day(s) John will ensure you get to the dive site with his designated dive master.

Believe me you'll be in great hands with Master Diver Big John Birk. I've been in his hands for forty years.

So don't hesitate. If you are planning a trip to Antigua, Big John Birk is the man to talk with.

Have a great Holiday.

FAQ's for Certified Divers

Q. When should I book?

A: Antigua is a busy place for divers so I recommend you book with me as soon as you can. Feel free to email me; antiguajohn@gmail.com if its a short answer I will email you back, it it's a long subject I have found that a 5 minute phone call will replace a dozen or more emails, just let me know your phone number and the best times to call and I will attempt to call you. Please remember to include which time zone you are in, (with Skype I can usually call you cheaper than you can call me. I pay on average 2 cents per minute). However there are some countries with exorbitant call rates, in which case it's back to email.

Q: If you are no longer diving, what is the advantage to me of contacting you?

A: I may have retired, however I still live on the island and I have 53 years of diving with 40 years of that in Antigua so just think of me as your personal source of information and advice regarding diving in Antigua. Unless you are a regular visitor to Antigua I can assist you with up-to date information thus helping you decide where and with whom to dive, and avoid expensive mistakes such as booking with a dive shop that may be a US$ 90 cab ride away!

Q. Do you offer continuing education.

A. We offer continuing education from advanced through Divemaster.

Q: Do you charge me for your advice?

A: No. The dive shops pay me a small commission for my services as they would for any other booking agent. This commission has no effect on what you pay.

Q: What about seasonal conditions?

A: During the fall, winter and spring, storms moving down across Canada and the US causes what is known as Ground Swell waves, causing large waves on the northern and western coasts of all the Caribbean islands, this can occur as often as 10 to 20 days a month to as few as none. In the past, when these Ground Swells occurred, dive boats would go to the southern side of Antigua where the water remains clear. However increases in fuel prices over the years resulted in fuel costs going from $30 to $60 up to $300 to $600 dollars per day making diving uneconomical from these areas. So even though I am retired, I offer a transport service from certain hotels to dive shops located closer to southern side of the island, there is a small charge for this, US $20 per round-trip per person, or you could take a taxi costing from US $70 to $90.

Q: When do you pick and which hotels do you pick up from?

A: We pick up between 7am and 8am, depending on how many hotels we are picking up from that day. If you are the only pick-up it will be at 8am, however, do call me the night before as schedules can change - (268) 464-DIVE (3483).

Q: Is there a minimum number needed for pick-up?

A: No! We pick up from the following hotels:

Jumby Bay Resort

Blue Waters Hotel

Trade Winds Hotel

Dickenson Bay Cottages

Halcyon Cove Rex

Sandals Grande Antigua

Antigua Village

Siboney Beach Club

Buccaneer Beach Club

Q: What if I don't see my hotel listed?

A: It may be outside my pick-up zone, however, email me and I will be able to advise you on dive shops closer to your hotel and I may also be able to have them pick you up.

Q: What if I have additional questions?

A: Feel free to email me; antiguajohn@gmail.com if it's a short answer I will email you back, if it's a long subject I have found that a 5 minute phone call will replace a dozen or more emails. Just let me know your phone number and the best times to call and I will attempt to call you. Please remember to include which time zone you are in, (with Skype I can usually call you cheaper than you can call me. I pay on average 2 cents per minute).
